Trustees vote to close library for October painting
Library · Meeting of September 10, 2026
Saugus library trustees vote to close the building Oct. 15-24 for an interior painting project and approve a $30,000 state aid earmark for fiscal 2027. Library Director Alan Thiebaud told the Board of Library Trustees the painting bid totals $31,000, likely rising about $1,000 after an expanded scope to repaint the building's foyers. The state aid account held $227,584.47 as of September 1, with trustees required to keep a reserve of "not less than $120,000." Thiebaud described the reserve as "what they commonly refer to as free cash." The $30,000 earmark splits into $23,000 for programs, $2,500 for materials, $2,000 for supplies and $2,500 for professional development.
The library's eight summer concerts at the Saugus Iron Works drew 1,329 attendees, and 53 adults completed summer reading, the largest adult turnout Thiebaud said he has seen.
