Saugus Library Board Eyes Possible Vote to Cut Marblehead Borrowing Access

Saugus library trustees monitor Marblehead's 50 percent library funding cut and potential decertification. Library Director Thibault told the Board of Trustees at its May 14 meeting that Marblehead has threatened to cut its appropriation to the Abbott Public Library by 50 percent unless voters approve an override to cover a $7 million budget gap, with Abbott's board planning to close the library on December 1 if funding falls short and state decertification expected around February 4, 2027. Abbott management has already asked NOBLE network libraries to deny Marblehead cardholders access to collections, computers, museum passes, and programs.

Thibault, who witnessed the same tactic succeed in Winthrop in 2009 and said it recently played out in Stoneham and Melrose, told trustees Saugus operates on roughly seven-tenths of one percent of the town's budget and faces no similar immediate risk. The board took no vote on restricting Marblehead access, agreeing to meet specially if decertification becomes imminent, and tabled a new lost and found policy until June 11 after the document was missing from the meeting packet.
