Nahant Select Board hears Stantec's plan to narrow Castle Road but takes no vote.
Select Board · Meeting of September 2, 2026
Nahant Select Board hears Stantec's plan to narrow Castle Road but takes no vote. Stantec engineer Nick walked the board through a design that would cut the road's curb-to-curb width from 30 feet to 22 feet near the former Coast Guard housing lots, replacing 13-foot travel lanes with 10-foot lanes and relocating the sidewalk inside the town layout line. Resident Carrie Collins objected that the plan serves "to make the land seem profitable" at pedestrians' expense, while Planning Board member Anne Marie pressed Stantec on easement alternatives.
Board members split between pursuing a voluntary "friendly" easement and ruling out a costly "unfriendly" taking, with one member saying he didn't "want to get into a legal battle that is going to be very costly for the taxpayer." The board also unanimously approved June 17 and July 1 meeting minutes and fall event permits, and directed the town administrator to contact the five or six affected property owners before any further action.
