Whittier Tech Approves $1.19M Budget Increase With No New Municipal Assessments

NEWBURYPORT — Whittier Tech School Committee approves $1.19M budget adjustment with no increase to town assessments. The Whittier Regional Vocational Technical School Committee voted unanimously at its May 13 meeting to raise the FY26 General Fund Operating Budget to $32,846,515, drawing $950,000 from the Excess and Deficiency Account into the district's Stabilization Account and directing $238,512 in carried-over transportation revenues toward vehicle replacements. Business Manager Kara Cosmas told the committee the E&D account would still hold roughly $800,000 heading into next year after investment earnings.

The board also voted unanimously to send roughly $10,714 in unclaimed COVID-era class funds — $6,315 from the class of 2020 and $4,399 from the class of 2021 — directly to the Whittier Tech Educational Foundation for scholarships and student hardships, while referring future unclaimed-fund policy to the policy subcommittee. The night opened with recognition of 31 SkillsUSA state medalists, including the gold-medal Health Knowledge Bowl team and marine technology gold medalist C.J. Gilbo, who will compete at nationals in Atlanta; SkillsUSA advisor Jane Moscovich, retiring after nearly a decade, was named a Lifetime Achievement member of Skills USA.
