LYNN — The Lynn School Committee voted 7-0 to send a formal letter opposing a new state regulation that could cost the district roughly $4 million a year. Compliance Officer Charlie Gallo and Manager of Translation Guillermo Cinelli said the DESE rule would require human review of nearly every machine-translated special education document for the 75 percent of Lynn families who speak a language other than English at home. "This requirement does go above and beyond the statutory mandate," Gallo said.
Member Gately recalled the district's past fight against charter expansion, saying "we worked too hard on this committee" to see language access rolled back. The committee also heard that Lynn's four-year graduation rate fell 6.8 points to 75.6 percent and learned that Project YES, a 20-year after-school program at Thurgood Marshall Middle School, was discontinued after a federal grant shortfall of more than $250,000.
