Lynn School Committee Weighs Restoring Cut Librarian Jobs

Lynn School Committee members push to restore two cut high school librarian positions ahead of an April 9 budget vote. Superintendent Cohen said the administration answered all 273 written questions members submitted about the fiscal 2027 budget, which still carries a $6.6 million gap after $2 million in earlier cuts. Member Sarai asked administrators "what the alternative could be" if librarian positions at Lynn Classical and Lynn English were preserved, while Member Ortiz-McGrath also pushed to restore music positions cut at Pickering Middle School.

Cohen said any restored position needs "a commensurate reduction" elsewhere. The committee separately heard that the district's dual-language program, now serving about 430 students at Harrington and Connery, will add Ingalls Elementary as a third site and expand into Thurgood Marshall Middle School in 2027. Members also questioned the $2.4 million cost of the CASA program, whose enrollment has fallen from 289 to 232 students.
