Groveland Select Board Releases 43-Year Quarry Bond, Tables Pride Flag Vote

GROVELAND — June 22, 2026 — Groveland Select Board releases a $83,382 quarry bond and tables a pride flag vote pending a new flag policy. The board voted 4-0 at its June 22 meeting to authorize release of $83,382.68 in cash bonds held since 1981 for the Sewell Street Quarry, determining that all conditions of the town's earth removal permit had been met; property owner William Daly of 7 Hemlock Lane will take the authorization to the bank holding the funds to establish his successor-in-interest claim. The board also tabled a Groveland Democratic Town Committee request to fly a pride flag at Town Hall, with Select Board Member Steve Baker citing the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Shurtleff v. City of Boston — which requires equal treatment of all flag requests once any third-party flag is approved — and directing Town Administrator Rebecca to draft a flag policy for the July 6 meeting. In a separate 4-0 vote, the board directed a letter to the Water and Sewer Commission asking whether the planned site for the town's roughly $29 million water treatment facility — located in proximity to the Merrimack River floodplain — remains open for reconsideration, after Select Board Member Kathy said she could not answer constituent questions about why the Pines Recreation Area site was chosen over alternatives.
