Town Outlines New Automated Trash, Recycling Plan
Swampscott held a public information session on its new automated trash and recycling contract, fielding resident questions.
Solid Waste Advisory Committee · Meeting of June 15, 2026
Swampscott held a public information session on its new automated trash and recycling contract, fielding resident questions. Town Administrator Nick Connors said the switch to mechanical-arm collection trucks begins "the third Monday in July," with every household receiving a new 96-gallon recycling cart alongside its existing 35-gallon trash barrel. Republic Services representative Dan Higgins said the company, which holds 43 Massachusetts municipal contracts, has stopped bidding manual-collection work nationwide, citing worker injuries: "We can't find people to do the work to be in the back of a truck." An additional 35-gallon barrel will require an annual fee still to be set by the Select Board, and a smaller 65-gallon recycling cart will be available free to seniors and residents with mobility limitations through registration.
Chair Emily Westhoven asked Connors to confirm a postcard mailing would reach every household before rollout. No votes were taken.
