Panel reviews rocky automated trash rollout
Swampscott's Solid Waste Advisory Committee reviewed early problems with the town's new automated trash and recycling system and a reworked bulk-pickup fee.
Solid Waste Advisory Committee · Meeting of August 10, 2026
Swampscott's Solid Waste Advisory Committee reviewed early problems with the town's new automated trash and recycling system and a reworked bulk-pickup fee. Vice Chair Alix Smullin and other members said roughly 300 households swapped 95-gallon barrels for 65-gallon ones, while 106 more requested additional barrels. Bulk-item pickup, once a flat $20 under a town-coordinated program, now runs $20 to $80 through Republic Services, paid directly by phone.
Chair Emily Westhoven flagged an unresolved accounting issue, saying "there are like six items on there that apparently have been paid for over a period of more than 15 months." The committee approved July 13 minutes unanimously and set an August 29 old-barrel drop-off at the DPW yard, modeled on a Marblehead program that diverted more than 2,200 barrels from landfills.
