Peabody City Council Passes $200 Trash Fee in 8-3 Vote

PEABODY — June 25, 2026 — Peabody City Council approves $200 residential trash fee and opts in to FIFA World Cup bar-hours extension. The council voted 8-3 Thursday to establish a $200 annual per-unit trash fee on all residential structures of four units or fewer, effective July 1, 2026 and locked at that rate for five years through June 30, 2031, with discounts of $100 each available to seniors, veterans, and residents with compost contracts. In a separate unanimous 11-0 vote, the council opted in to the governor's June 8 authorization allowing Peabody bars and restaurants to serve alcohol until 3 a.m. through July 31 for FIFA World Cup viewing, with Councilor Stephen Rossignol bringing the item directly to the floor to avoid missing the window. The council also continued a long-running Accessory Dwelling Unit zoning ordinance to July 9 after fire and police departments submitted late comments raising unresolved questions about sprinkler requirements and warrant service at rear ADUs. Two unanimous 11-0 special permits were granted: one to ETS Linfield Street, LLC to demolish a 1932-era, 4,500-square-foot building at 117 Linfield Street and replace it with a 3,000-square-foot restaurant and ice cream stand, and one to Revel Balloon Company, LLC, for a balloon and party supply retail shop at 145A Summit Street.
