School Committee · Meeting of June 11, 2026
Saugus's acting school board chair pressed an accountability message after a tense budget season, while the committee approved an amendment and several donations. Vice Chair Stephanie Mastrocola, filling in for absent Chair Tom Whittredge, told the School Committee "accountability is on all of us" and warned town funding could suffer if problems go unaddressed. Superintendent Hashem clarified that a 3 percent cost-of-living raise for 38 non-union staff, totaling $63,937, was built into the already-approved fiscal 2027 budget.
Member Dennis Gould called it the first budget in his memory to clear town meeting in 30 minutes with no line items challenged. The committee unanimously approved Budget Amendment No. 3 reallocating salary savings to utilities and transportation, bills of $996,082.91, and donations including $3,250 from Wind Waste Innovations, which passed with one abstention.
