School Committee · Meeting of August 26, 2026

Beverly School Committee approved retreat minutes 7-0 and punted a vote on two new hires to a Zoom meeting next week. Superintendent Dr. Cushing reported 64 hires so far this year and asked authorization for a special-services-program teacher and a one-to-one paraprofessional, both needed before the school year starts.

Mayor Mike Cahill said the city saved roughly $1 million buying eight electric buses outright with EPA and state grant funds, though a federal grant freeze beginning January 22, 2025, delayed utility hookups until this past June. The legislative delegation also secured a $200,000 state earmark for teacher laptops. Committee member Cahill pressed Cushing on seatbelt enforcement and mechanic training for the new buses, while legislative representative Mr.

Taylor warned the committee about Tennessee bills he said conflict with the Supreme Court's 1982 Plyler v. Doe ruling on educating undocumented children. Members spent roughly an hour debating, without resolving, a restructuring of subcommittee and full-committee meeting start times to avoid sessions running past 10 p.m.
