Andover Schools Adopt Protect Act Policy
School Committee · Meeting of September 3, 2026
Andover School Committee suspends its own rules to adopt a Protect Act policy after missing the state's deadline. Members voted 5-0 to suspend policy BGB and adopt new policy ACL governing civil immigration enforcement on school property, calling the state's August 21 compliance guidance, issued after the September 1 deadline, "really regrettable." The committee also approved a 3 percent substitute-teacher pay increase for fiscal year 2027, accepted $286,000 in donations including $75,000 raised by the Sanborn PTO toward a new playground funded with the Ritzer Foundation, and opened first readings on four policies covering student medication, seclusion and restraint, school choice and building access. Superintendent Taverna reported opening-day enrollment of 5,346 students and six open staff positions districtwide.
