World Cup watch parties on the Town Hall lawn brought Swampscott online buzz — and a thank-you note from visitors who came all the way from Scotland.

SWAMPSCOTT --

COMMUNITY -- At this week's Select Board meeting, Town Administrator Nick Connors and board members discussed the town's free World Cup watch parties held on the Town Hall lawn, which overlapped with the Strawberry Festival and Parade weekend. Connors said the festival "was great," drawing "so many volunteers, vendors, and even a World Cup game that happened to be happening at the same time," calling it "a great crowd and a great turnout." A board member said the watch parties were drawing widespread praise online, saying he'd seen people "giving Swampscott tons of praise for the World Cup games on the lawn" on Reddit. Board members also said an email arrived this week from two visitors from Scotland who watched games on the lawn "with the ocean in the background" after being unable to get down to Foxborough, and thanked the town for how it welcomed visitors throughout the event.
