Salem Seeks Three Residents For New Taxpayer Relief Panel
SALEM — The city is recruiting three residents to join a newly formed Taxpayer Relief Committee that will oversee a new Taxpayer Aid Fund, while Salem Public Schools' search for a new superintendent concluded this week with the School Committee's selection of a Boston Public Schools administrator, per Patch reporting.

The City of Salem announced it is seeking three residents to serve on the newly formed Taxpayer Relief Committee, which per state law will oversee the newly established Taxpayer Aid Fund, according to the town's News Flash feed. The city is also accepting nominations through Aug. 14 for the Sam Zoll Civic Leadership Award, recognizing a community member who strengthens Salem through public service, volunteering or civic engagement.
The city's Park, Recreation and Community Services department released its August newsletter, and a Seaside Soirée fundraiser aboard the Pride of Baltimore II is set for July 31 to benefit Salem400+ and Heritage Days programming, kicking off a celebration that continues August 1 with the Salem400+ Heritage Days Parade and Festival.

Salem's School Committee has completed its superintendent search. According to Patch, the committee voted to offer the position to Thomas Welch, an associate superintendent with Boston Public Schools, and Welch said he was "deeply humbled" and vowed to bring student-centered leadership to the district, per Patch's report on the Wednesday-night vote.
Separately, Patch reported that Collins Middle School math teacher Sandra Castillo was honored among 57 Latino educators recognized at the State House Shine Awards, a distinction for Salem's teaching staff as the district heads toward the new school year.

The House of the Seven Gables has launched a $1 million campaign to build a new museum dedicated to Nathaniel Hawthorne, according to a Google Alert item from 105.7 WROR, with the experience planned as part of the historic Salem site's expansion. The City of Salem has also invited residents to vote for Beautification Committee "Ladies of Salem" figureheads, with the top six vote-getters to be featured on the Beautification Committee float during the August 1 Heritage Days Parade.
