Recreation Commission · Meeting of September 2, 2026
Newbury Recreation Commission opens door to a $423,000 fitness court. Members Mary Anastasia, John Regan, David Brohl and Michael Grouch voted unanimously to let the National Fitness Campaign pursue grant funding for an outdoor fitness court and yoga area, while insisting "we guarantee that we get the final say" before any town money is committed. The project's estimated cost is $423,000, with a National Fitness Campaign grant of $30,000 to $60,000 and state MassTrails grants of up to $500,000 among the funding sources discussed; the commission also holds roughly $140,000 of its own reserve funds.
Separately, members debriefed Newbury Town Day, which drew more than a thousand attendees but ran its sound system off a Tesla after generator hookups failed, and agreed youth soccer must clear equipment off town fields by November 15.
