Methuen Opens Preregistration for New Curbside Composting Program

METHUEN — The City of Methuen opened preregistration Monday for a new curbside composting program with Black Earth Compost, giving residents a new way to keep food waste out of the trash, even as crews responded to a water main break on Longwood Drive and the city prepared for a second round of preventive mosquito spraying at parks and ballfields.

The city announced Monday that residents can now preregister for curbside composting through a new partnership with Black Earth Compost, calling it an easy way to cut household waste and protect the environment. Details on cost, start date and sign-up were pointed to in the city's announcement.

A water main break on Longwood Drive prompted an alert on the city's website Monday; the city did not immediately post additional details on repair timing or affected addresses.

The city will conduct preventive mosquito control applications at parks, playgrounds, athletic fields and school recreation areas Monday, July 20, from roughly 9 p.m. to midnight, with a rain date of Tuesday, July 21.

Election preparations are also underway: registered voters can cast ballots early, in person, from August 22-28 at Sanborn Hall for the 2026 State Primary, or request a mail ballot, with applications now arriving in mailboxes and a deadline to apply of August 25 at 5 p.m. The city has also scheduled a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Community Involvement Meeting for July 29 to update residents on how the federal funding is being used locally.

The Zoning Board of Appeals meets Wednesday, July 22. Three city bodies meet Thursday, July 23: the Methuen Retirement Board, the Charter Review Committee and the Historic District Commission. Also Thursday, the city holds a Disability Pride Month flag-raising ceremony. The rain date for this week's mosquito spraying at parks and school recreation areas is Tuesday, July 21.
