Methuen Moves to End FY27 Furloughs, Boost School Funding

Mayor Beauregard announced legislation to eliminate unpaid employee furloughs for fiscal 2027 while increasing the city's investment in public education, according to a City of Methuen announcement, as officials also opened signups for a new curbside composting program.

Mayor Beauregard's proposed legislation would end the unpaid furloughs city employees have faced and direct additional funding toward Methuen's public schools, the city said in an announcement posted to its website. No further detail on cost or the legislative process was included in the city's release.

Separately, the City of Methuen opened preregistration for a new curbside composting program run with Black Earth Compost, giving residents a new option for cutting household waste (read more at https://www.methuen.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?aid=287). The city is also promoting its free Summer Eats program, which offers meals to all children and teens 18 and under at four Methuen locations this summer with no registration, ID, or proof of income required. In a public-health notice, the city said it will conduct preventive mosquito control applications at parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and school recreation areas on Monday, July 20, from approximately 9 p.m. to midnight, with a rain date of Tuesday, July 21. The city has also scheduled a Community Development Block Grant Community Involvement Meeting for July 29 to update residents on CDBG programs.

Methuen residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste on Saturday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Transfer Station on Huntington Avenue; construction debris, trash, recycling, and yard waste will not be accepted. The Circle of Hope Family Support Group is scheduled for Monday, July 20, according to the city's community events calendar.
