Methuen Mayor Announces Plan to End Furloughs, Boost School Funding

METHUEN — Mayor Beauregard announced legislation this week to eliminate unpaid employee furloughs for fiscal year 2027 while increasing investment in Methuen's public schools, the city said. The announcement came the same week the city opened preregistration for a new curbside composting program and continued distributing vote-by-mail applications ahead of this year's state elections.

Separately, the City of Methuen has opened preregistration for a new curbside composting program in partnership with Black Earth Compost, giving residents an easier way to cut household waste, the city said. Vote-by-mail applications are also arriving in Methuen mailboxes for the 2026 State Primary and State Election; eligible voters can use the postage-paid form to request a ballot for one or both elections.

The city will hold a Community Development Block Grant Community Involvement Meeting on July 29 to provide an update on CDBG programs, according to the announcement.

Methuen has scheduled a Circle of Hope Family Support Group for Monday, July 20, and will mark Disability Pride Month with a flag-raising ceremony Thursday, July 23, according to the city calendar.

COMING UP

Methuen will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday, July 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Transfer Station on Huntington Avenue. Construction debris, trash, recycling, and yard waste will not be accepted.

The city will also conduct preventive mosquito control applications at parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and school recreation areas Monday, July 20, from approximately 9 p.m. to midnight, with a rain date of Tuesday, July 21.
