Commission Finalizes Plans For Human Library Event

Accessibility Commission · Meeting of September 24, 2026

DANVERS — The Danvers Accessibility Commission finalized logistics for its first Human Library event, set for October 17 at the Senior Center. Chair J.D. Martz said A-frame sandwich-board signs would cost $38 each, but a volunteer identified as Arden offered to lend three sign holders at no cost, saving the commission's limited event budget. Member Christi Showman Farrar described her recent volunteer "book" training, where she chose to describe herself as "quadriplegic" rather than "wheelchair user" for her program title.

Member Aimee Velazquez relayed statistics from a Human Rights and Inclusion Committee meeting, saying "people with disabilities require three times more suicidal ideation compared to people without disabilities," and flagged a free local mental health first aid training with sessions October 16, November 11 and December 11. The commission also publicized an October 14 Hispanic Heritage Month event, Celebración, at the Bowman Library.
